Reviewing a fantastic start to the year

2023 began with a sense of foreboding for the events and hospitality industry. Talk of a recession was rife and there were whispers of a bumpy ride ahead. Fast forward… and as we close out February, hasta is looking back fondly on two fantastic months that have seen many bums on seats, smiling faces and cheering voices across some epic events. We will hold our hands up and admit that it has been a very rugby-heavy start to our year.

This year, Rugby fans have had plenty to talk about! From Scotland’s unprecedented shot at a Grandslam in the Guinness Six Nations tournament to potential Welsh strikes and changes in the rules of play – there is no shortage of topics for debate. We are pleased to provide commentary from passionate ex-pros who share their insights into what each nation can expect over this remarkable season! WHAT DID ALEX PAYNE, KELLY BROWN, GEORGE KRUIS, BENJAMIN KAYSER, SHANE WILLIAMS AND RORY BEST HAVE TO SAY?

My Name’5 Doddie Burns Supper.

For the second year running, we had the privilege to partner with The My Name’5 Doddie Foundation to create an unbelievable Burns Night celebration at The Brewery in the heart of London. This was an incredibly poignant event, as it was the first since the great Doddie Weir’s passing last November.

The likes of Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Kelly Brown and Louise The Piper provided incredible entertainment, while guests were able to rub shoulders with Scotland’s finest. Most importantly, we were able to raise a fantastic sum of money to further the research into curing Motor Neurone Disease.

6 Nations Preview Lunch

Embarking on February with esteemed rugby pundits leading the way, legends of the sport gathered to share their experiences and insights in an intimate setting. On the eve of the Guinness 6 Nations Tournament, George Kruis, Benjamin Kayser, Rory Best OBE, Shane Williams MBE and Kelly Brown captivated audiences by discussing what it takes both mentally and physically to excel as a professional athlete. Expertly led by Alex Payne, we were able to hear the predictions and gossip surrounding the competing nations.

We were delighted to be teaming up with The Rugby Players Association for this yearly event, a fitting way of showing our support after such an unpredictable time in rugby. All proceeds raised from the occasion went towards Restart Rugby and their noble cause!

The First XV Suite, BT Murrayfield

The 2022 autumn internationals saw the launch of The First XV Suite at BT Murrayfield Stadium. This year it is back and bluer than ever! Not only did Scotland score a historic win against Wales, but anyone who was lucky enough to be in our suite was treated to an absolute bevvy of speaking talent. Two panels consisting of former captains, Sam Warburton, Rory Lawson, John Barclay and Kelly Brown. Followed by Rory, Andy Powell, Adam Hastings and Gethin Jones (not a rugby player, but a class act). Finally, guests were treated to a chat with the current gems in the Scottish team; Finn Russell & Duhan Van Der Merwe. It’s safe to say that Scottish fans left hoarse with cheering, however, the panel guaranteed all travelling fans left with sore cheeks from sheer laughter.

Once again, we were truly proud to be supporting My Name’5 Doddie, with guests willing to bid for almost anything in the room during the auction.

Looking ahead to March

March will bring an even more entertaining set of sporting events, almost too much to fit in. To keep it brief, hasta are most excited for:

  • The First XV Suite is back for Scotland v Ireland and Italy. And with the topsy-turvy world of rugby, we’re quietly hoping that the Italy match will be Scotland’s chance for a first title in 30 years
  • Cheltenham Festival. hasta loves its horse racing… and there are few better days out than this Cotswolds juggernaut. Hopefully, we’ll see you on the steam train down
