Killing it in business but also the planet?

You may think your killing it in business but are you also killing the planet?

Given it’s a ‘code red for humanity’, the need to be leaders of change as well as industry is more important than ever. There has never been a more urgent time to review your supply chain, business practices and office environment. It doesn’t take much to make a huge environmental impact.

We’ve been open about our mission to reduce single plastic consumption and have been a paperless office since our inception, saving 160,000 sheets of paper a year and approximately 80 toner cartridges. That being said, there are also a few more ways to become a sustainable business and we are working on these too. We are committed to being carbon negative and plastic-free by January 2023.

Customers are becoming more discerning with who they spend their money. It has become increasingly important for all stakeholders that businesses safeguard the planet. Here’s 5 ways you can kill it in business but also save the planet.

Sustainability Reporting

Reporting on your sustainability is a really good way of holding yourself to account for and assessing areas of strength and improvement. Going further, if you decide to make environmental, social and governmental (ESG) data public, the impacts you are having could be vital in ensuring your business is successful in the long term.
Not only does ESG data help you with best practices, but it also lets stakeholders, such as consumers and investors know what type of company you are. This is increasingly important as we move into the age of the ethical and activist consumer.


The pandemic changed the way we communicate forever. Whilst many of us were already using digital platforms, no one used them to the extent we do now. This is not something that should be abandoned as the world is opening up. Businesses shouldn’t treat video conferencing as a ‘nice to have’ alternative to travel but as a necessity. Flights or other modes of transport should be strictly regulated and stringently evaluated if they are necessary. Transport emissions are also relative to your employees. Providing incentives for your staff to cycle or walk to work can have a positive effect on a company’s carbon footprint.

Business travel that is sustainable benefits both the bottom line and the environment. By reducing the need for travel, companies can lower their travel costs and reduce CO2 emissions. 

Office supplies

As you know, hasta is a paperless office, saving thousands in costs a year. Not only does this make Charles in Finance happy, but it also pleases Mother Earth. As well as sustainable office supplies, creating a recycling program for used supplies will reduce your carbon footprint. Only purchasing items made of recycled plastics needs to also be high on your list of changes.

The impact is cumulative and so even making sustainable switches on a small level will add up. Energy efficient lights bulbs, eco-friendly cleaning supplies, recycled paper and powering down all equipment at the end of the day are just some of the easy and swift changes you can implement in your office today.

Supply chains

When was the last time you checked your supply chain’s sustainability policy? There is no point in creating a green business plan for yourself if you are not sourcing your products and services from responsible companies. It has been proven that customers and employees not only benefit from but prefer working with sustainable businesses. Make time to review your contracts and ask what your vendors are doing to safeguard the planet. If they have no answer, perhaps it is time to change to a company that aligns with your values.

Stakeholder Engagement

In addition to offering incentives for your staff in regards to transport, as business leaders, we should be looking at other ways to engage stakeholders on our journey to sustainability. Training and education are fundamental aspects of this. We want to inspire everyone to make a change both in and out of the office. Engagement and training provide crucial information to employees on how they might make their home lives greener. Companies need to understand the priorities of their key stakeholders as this can inform your own green businesses policy.


We all have the right to kill it in business and should encourage each other to do so, but not at the cost of the planet. Make it green and make it positive.
