National CBD Day: Interview with George Kruis and Dom Day, Founders of fourfivecbd

CBD has taken the health market by storm and is a current wellness buzzword. From oils and topicals to water and even lollipops, lots of things now claim to have CBD in them and wield its magical properties.

So what is it?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the Cannabis sativa plant and unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the primary active ingredient in the plant, CBD is not psychoactive. CBD has been cited as having a positive impact on an array of conditions including anxiety, stress and muscle soreness, but with all lots of brands sticking their fingers in the CBD pie, it can be hard to see the wood from the trees. Luckily for you, this National CBD Day we got talking to the best and safest CBD brand around, fourfivecbd, to find out more.

Former Saracens and England rugby players, George Kruis and Dom Day, founded fourfivecbd for athletes and created a product by athletes. It is one of the most trusted brands on the market today and a company we at hasta are proud to be partnering with.

Tell us the story of how you both discovered CBD?

There was chatter in the changing room and some of the players were talking about CBD and its potential benefits. Following a series of injuries, we both had an increased interest in finding out more about alternative therapies. Dom conducted some background research on CDB that echoed the anecdotal benefits discussed in the changing room, and we decided to try it ourselves.

What made you try it yourselves?

Once the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and Global Dro approved the use of CBD (with less than 0.2% THC) in January 2018 and after reading about other professionals trying it, we decided to give it a go ourselves. Our thinking was that it was natural and if it worked, it could be a better choice to reduce some of the strains that come with being an athlete.

What kind of effect has CBD had on you?

For us, we saw a dramatic improvement in a number of symptoms. It also forms part of our daily routine and helps us live a healthy and active lifestyle.

So how did you go from using CBD to creating your own CBD business?

Running a business is actually a way for us to have something else to focus on besides rugby. Most people participate in sports to relax when they aren’t working. For us, it’s the other way around.

There’s a lot of information about CBD out there as well as brands. As an athlete, you need to be extremely cautious about what you put into your body, so we saw an opportunity to create a high-quality product that people could trust. After adopting it as part of our routines as rugby players and seeing the impact it had on us individually, we decided to create a business that enables athletes to use a CBD product that is safe and tested to the highest standard. We want fourfivecbd to be the most trustworthy source of CBD with the best provenance and certification that anyone can get.

Professional sport is a short career. Like many other athletes, we are starting to plan for life off the field, which is why we’ve also recently launched our Teamplayers programme.

How much CBD should a user take?

It’s a very individual thing, however, we’d suggest starting with a small dose (all our products are clearly labelled) and building up until the user finds the right dosage for them. If you are new to CBD use, we recommend you start with our lower strength products and no one should take more than 100mg per day. Always consult your health care professional before taking any new supplements.

Tell us about your BSCG range that is aimed at athletes that get drug tested regularly.

Many professional athletes, coaches, and nutritionists have seen the benefits of taking CBD but have had concerns about the provenance of products currently available on the market. Our BSCG tested products are a direct response to that demand. Confidence in CBD is key; athletes need to know that what they are taking won’t get them banned, which is why our pro range has 0% THC and cross contamination and is certified by the Banned Substances Control Group (BSCG).

What is your vision for fourfivecbd as a business?

Continuing to establish the brand as the go-to name for athletes and active people wanting to use CBD is a top priority over the next year, as is expanding our product range. We’ve also launched our Nutrition range with vitamins and supplements. We see ourselves as a very much as a wellness company.
